Jamaal Bowman: From Public Housing to Congress

Early Life and Education

WEB Jamaal Anthony Bowman was born on April 1, 1976, in New York City. He spent his early years in public housing and rent-controlled apartments. Bowman attended public schools in the Bronx and earned a bachelor's degree in social science and psychology from Manhattanville College.

Political Career

Bowman began his political career as a middle school principal in the Bronx. He was elected to the New York State Assembly in 2016 and served three terms. In 2020, Bowman unseated incumbent Rep. Eliot Engel in a Democratic primary and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

As a member of Congress, Bowman has been a vocal advocate for progressive policies, including Medicare for All, the Green New Deal, and criminal justice reform. He is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus.

Recent Challenges

Bowman's recent primary race in a suburban New York district became a referendum on progressive attitudes toward Israel. Bowman, who supports the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement, was defeated by a moderate White county executive.

Despite this setback, Bowman remains a rising star in the Democratic Party. He is a powerful voice for progressive values and is likely to continue to play a significant role in American politics for years to come.
